Architecture & Design
Banteay Samre showcases the elegance and craftsmanship of Khmer architecture, with a distinctive layout, grand entrance, and intricate carvings. Its high central tower is surrounded by courtyards, galleries, and a unique stone-paved inner moat. A long, raised causeway leads to the temple’s heart, while detailed bas-reliefs depict Hindu mythology, including stories of Vishnu and scenes from the Ramayana.
Historical Significance
The Name: Banteay Samre is believed to be named after the Samré, an ancient local ethnic group who lived in the region. The name reflects the temple’s connection to the people and communities of the area.
Restoration: Between 1936 and 1944, the temple underwent extensive restoration using anastylosis, a careful technique that involves dismantling damaged sections and rebuilding them with the original stones whenever possible. This painstaking work helped restore Banteay Samre’s impressive architecture, balance, and distinctive Khmer beauty.
